The town of Armstrong had a population of about 300 people in 1955, along with the CNR passenger depot and the roundhouse-servicing area which was located just ahead of the locomotive and to the rear of the photographer.
Class U-1-f Mountain type No. 6073 is seen snaking into the east end of the six track Armstrong yard pulling a healthy string of mixed freight running as Extra 6073 West. The train has just traversed the 112.2 mile Kowkash Subdivision from Nakina, Ontario. The road at the left leads to the USAF 914th AC&W Radar site located a mile east of town.
