D-7 Caterpillar at bottom of cliff. Lost during the winter of 1961 - July 1963.
It appears that one of the drivers was clearing the road between the upper and the lower camp. Diesels were quite difficult to start when it was that cold - so he decided to simply leave the Cat running when he left his machine for a cup of coffee. When he returned, his remarks were "God damn! Somone stole my Cat". He followed the tracks that led to the edge of the cliff. It appears that the Cat "vibrated itself into gear" and proceeded off the cliff on its own. In true military fashion, the story has it that the driver was promoted to a higher rank so the USAF could attach his pay to reimburse the cost of the Cat.
