Although a twenty four hour watch is maintained in the operations building the technical personnel are still living at RCAF Station Ucluelet, and commute by Marine Craft to and from Spring Cove each day.

Some progress on the buildings has been made but owing to a shortage of material, notably plumbing supplies, it will be some time yet before the buildings will be ready for occupancy. Fog in the ealy morning turning to rain which cleared by noon.

Fog in the morning but dispersed by 1100 hours and by 1400 hours the sun was shining brightly. In the afternoon the Detachment was visited by Squadron Leader JH Emery of Air Force Headquarters, Ottawa.

Weather only fair in the morning but cleared somewhat by the afternoon. All work on the buildings stopped for lack of materials.

Some fog in the morning but clear by noon. Bright and sunny by the afternoon. A supply of paint for the interior of the buildings arrived and a start on the inside painting was made by No. 1 WCU.

Foggy in the morning but cleared by 1100 hrs. Bright and warm in the afternoon. The Station was visited by Air Vice Marshal JA Sully of AFHQ accompanied by Air Commodore Guthrie of HQ, WAC, Group Captain Graham and several other officers of AFHQ, arrived and departed by air.

The sick quarters and Recreation Building still require finishing coats of paint before they are ready for occupancy.
Work has been started on the footings for the Water Tower but the material for the Tower and Tank has not yet arrived.
Some work has been done with a bulldozer on the road between Spring Cove and the village of Ucluelet but no attempt has been made to any ditching or gravelling to make it passable in wet weather. Some five hundred feet of plank sidewalk has been laid at Spring Cove end but in wet weather the balance of the road could not be used even as a footpath unless further planking is laid or the surface gravelled.

Bright and clear all day. More than sixty percent of strength still quartered at parent unit and commute daily by boat. Initial issue of kitchen range and dishes still deficient.

Cloudy and cool all day. Airmen's Mess and kitchen now in use as borrowed kitchen range moved from old quarters above Sagger's store. Security Guard and a few HQ personnel occupying Barrack Blocks but some difficulty being encountered in maintaining an adequate supply of water.

Still hazy although quite warm all day. The use of the trailer Fire Pump was obtained through the courtesy of W/C RC Mair, Commanding Officer of the parent Unit and the newly completed Water Tank was filled with water. Considerable leakage developed at first but when the hoops were tightened the loss was considerably reduced.

Warm with considerable smoke haze. The water mains and plumbing were tested for leaks and the sewage system was flushed out. The Water Tank still leaking in two places. The tank was filled again to the brim and will be left for a period of forty-eight hours to give it a chance to thoroughly tighten up.

Heavy fog early morning cleared by 1000 hrs. Less smoke. A dump truck was borrowed from parent Unit and thirty drums of fuel oil were delivered to the power plant. The truck was returned to the parent Unit by scow.

The Water Tank still continues to leak in two places but the staves seem to be swelling and it is anticipated the loss of water will be stopped in time. Quite foggy all day.

Dull with only a light mist. The working party from No 1 WC Unit completed pouring cement floor in garage.

Visibility considerably improved. F/O McKinty and P/O Harlund of HQ, WAC arrived on TD to conduct some research work.

Water chlorination system installed. Necessary to obtain use of a welding outfit from the Workshops at parent Unit to weld nipples to water main. The chlorine tank and pump protected from the elements in a small shelter erected at the foot of the Water Tower. Good visibility all day.

Light mist in early morning, cleared by 1100 hrs. Water Tank refilled by obtaining loan from the parent Unit of a small portable fire fighting pump and ten lengths of hose. The Water Tank has tightened up and there is only one small slow leak.
Although the Boiler for the Operations building arrived it is incomplete and installation cannot be effected until such time as missing parts are received. The buildings at Spring Cove continue to be unheated as no space heaters have been received. The Refrigerator is still unusable as the Compressor and coil is still missing. The electrical fixtures are still incomplete in two Barrack Blocks.
F/O McKinty and P/O Harlund are still conducting investigations and experiments with the equipment and have succeeded in isolating the trouble and eliminating some faults.

Some fog in the morning. Cleared somewhat by 1200 hrs. F/O McKinty went out in Marine Craft 234 to make a test but was unable to make contact with Amphitrite Point.

F/O McKinty and P/O Harlund still conducting experiments and tests at Operations building. Marine Craft 234 with F/O McKinty and special equipment aboard had to return because of rain and heavy mist.

F/O McKinty completed a test run in Marine Craft 234 although a ten mile bank of fog along the coast hampered operations to some extent. Clear and bright all afternoon. Space heaters for buildings at Spring Cove arrived but cannot be used as stove pipes on hand are too large and no reducers or thimbles sent with shipment.

Rain during the night and early morning but by 1000 hrs sun was shining. Calibration test carried out with aircraft from 4 (BR) Squadron. Water Tank filled by utilizing small fire pump on loan from parent Unit.

Bright and sunny all day. Boiler House and wood shelter completed at Operations Building. Plumbers from No 1 WCU are busy installing boiler and radiators as missing parts have now been received.

Good visibility, sun shone all day long. Unit visited by Air Commodore Guthrie of WAC accompanied by S/L Dumbrille.

Fair visibility in the morning. Rain started falling at 1430 hrs and continued until late at night accompanied by a stiff wind from the South East. Some four inches of rain fell before the storm abated.

Visibility continued to improve all morning and by noon the sun was shining. The rough sea and ground swells resulting from the stron wind of the day previous damaged the sewer pipe near the outlet.

Somewhat cloudy but fair visibility. The WCU are attempting to repair the broken sewer pipe. Water tank filled by obtaining the loan of a small fire pump and ten lengths of fire hose from the parent Unit. Considerable difficulty is being experienced in keeping the water scow free of the dock. Unless some better means of anchoring the water scow is devised it is feared that the dock will be damaged some time during stormy weather.

The sewer outlet has been repaired and protected with rocks and cement. Some clouds but fair visibility at night. Station visited by Group Captain Van Vliet of Ottawa accompanied by Group Captain McLeod.

Bright sun all day. The Water pump came in on the MV Josephine from Port Alberni and was placed on a scow to be taken to Spring Cove.

Fair in the morning and part of the afternoon but at 1630 hrs a heavy rain set in continuing until 2100 hrs. Water tank filled by obtaining use of small fire pump from parent Unit.

Cloudy all morning. Parade of all personnel not on duty and inspection of personnel and buildings by Officer Commanding. Commenced raining about 1100 hrs and continued until 1800 hrs.

Bright sunshine all day with a cool NW wind. A piano for the Recreation Building arrived by boat through the courtesy of the YMCA.

Some rain fell during the night. Cloudy with poor visibility all morning. Rain started at noon and continued in a steady downpour until late at night. Water tank filled by obtaining use of small fire fighting pump from parent Unit.

Low clouds, poor visibility in the morning, cleared by noon with some sunshine in the late afternoon.
The water pump has not yet been sited and installed as W&B have been busy with other construction work at the parent Unit. The check valves and gauges have not yet been received from the manufacturer but are expected shortly.
Some difficulty has been experineced in keeping the wood burning fires going through the night as the wood is wet; no wood shelters having been provided, consequently there is no place to store a supply of dry wood.

Cloudy all day with fair visibility. Detachment visited by S/L Millar of the Equipment branch of WAC on a regular inspection visit. F/O Garland departed by boat to return to HQ, WAC.

Heavy rainstorm accompanied by a strong wind in the early morning. Telephone connection with parent Unit broken sometime during night. Repairs effected by 1030 hrs. Rain fell intermittently throughout the day. Very high seas running outside. Water scow had to be taken to the bomb dock at Ucluelet as it was too dangerous to leave it tied to the dock at Spring Cove.

The heavy wind during the night blew down both the R/T aerials and communications by this means was impossible. Repairs effected and communications restored by 0930 hrs with WAC. F/O Sweetser of Number 1 WCU, Vancouver arrived with six men to install the panel and switchboard at the power plant and the water pump for the water tower and fire fighting.

Light frost during night. Clear with scattered clouds all day. Work commenced on installation of new switchboard at power plant and secondary power line.

Heavy rain during the night. Intermittent showers during the morning. Bright and clear in the afternoon. Thirty drums of fuel oil taken to power plant by obtaining the loan of a truck from the parent Unit. Barbed and concertina wire transported to the Point for added protection of Operations Building.

Bright and clear all day. Authority received to install Water pump on Government dock thus eliminating the expense of building special footings and platform. Work progressing on secondary power line but some material not yet received. Unit visited by Command Messing Officer, F/O Martin, on official duties.

Steady rain in the morning. Clearing to intermittent showers in the afternoon. Only one of the three tubs of fresh water on the water scow could be used to partially fill the Water tank as the other two were contaminated by the Sea Gulls. The small fire fighting pump had to be borrrowed from the parent Unit as material to connect up the Water Pump not yet received.

Clear with scattered clouds. A work party from Number 1 Works Construction Unit commenced installing the water pump. As some fittings are missing it was decided to weld some of the joints and the welding machine was borrowed for half a day from the parent Unit.
11 Nov 42
Bright and clear all day. Trouble developed in antenna rotating unit about 1800 hours on the tenth and operations were discontinued at 1900 hrs same day. Investigations revealed a broken casing in reducer unit. Complete casting had to be transported to parent Unit workshops for repairs as spare part not available. Repairs effected by brazing and Unit returned to Operations building by 1600 hrs today. Re-installation effected by 1900 hrs and Detachment back on the air by 1920 hours.

Clear and bright all day with a cool wind. The working party from No 1 WCU completed the installation of the Water pump and feeder water line. As it was nearly dark it could only be given a brief test but seemed to be in good working order.

Steady rain all day. The Water Tank filled by newly installed water pump for the first time. Complete Unit, Water line, etc, in excellent working order. Temporary covers of roofing paper have been fitted on the Tubs on the Water Scow as a measure to keep out some of the dirt and to prevent, if possible, contamination by Sea Gulls.

Clear with scattered clouds most of the day. Intermittent showers late in the afternoon with a rising wind. Repairs effected to Water Boiler in Operations Building. F/L HW Bishop arrived to take over command of the Detachment having reported in to the parent Unit on the 28th of November.

At daybreak it was discovered that the Water Scow had broken loose from its moorings and had damaged the Water pipe on the side of the Government Dock. The pipe was broken in three places and is the property of the Standard Oil Company. The MV Plover arrived and took the Water Scow away to a safer anchorage at Ucluelet. Some better system of anchoring the scow will have to be provided to prevent a recurrence of this damage which can be directly attributed to the strong winds and heavy ground swells.
The General health of the Detachment is good with only a few personnel reporting sick during the month mostly with common colds or minor complaints.
A standard size Pool Table has been provided by the YMCA and has been set up in the Recreation Hall.
The Quarterly Overhaul of RDF Equipment was completed Sunday morning, the 29th, the equipment tested and the Detachment was back on the air at 0001 hrs on the 30th.

F/O JW McKinty of Western Air Command, who has been with the detachment for some weeks on Temporary Duty, departed by boat to return to Headquarters, Western Air Command. The Detachment was visited by Lt. Col. Kingham, Command Defence Officer, S/L Heaps of Western Air Command, and F/O Walden, Station Defence Officer on official duties.

Frost during the night. Bright and clear throughout the day. A fault developed in the Transmitter at 1720 hours and Detachment was off the air until 2000 hours when fault was corrected.

Somewhat cloudy but fair visibility in the morning turning colder. Snow started falling at 1600 hours and continued throughout most of the night. P/O WH Stephenson of Western Air Command arrived to make some adjustments to the R/T.

Bright and fairly clear most of the day. Commenced raining 1800 hours turning to snow at 2130 hours continued all night. A Church Service was held in the Recreation hall at 1430 hours with the Chaplain from Ucluelet in charge. The majority of the personnel not on duty were in attendance.

Bright and clear all day with some scattered clouds. Despite the rainy weather and the difficulties encountered in obtaining dry wood for the wood burning heaters in the various buildings, the general health of the Detachment remains good with only a few cases of minor ailments.
The pool table supplied by the YMCA is in almost continuous use during the off duty hours. It has not yet been possible to have Motion pictures shown at the Detachment but boat transportation is provided every Tuesday and Friday night to the parent Unit to enable the personnel to attend the regular showing there of Motion pictures.
