1 Jan 45

Mild with rain. No activity. Dinner held for personnel of the Unit in the evening.

2 Jan 45

Mild. Slight activity otherwise operations normal.

3 Jan 45

Mild with rain, cloudy. #9 CMU personnel arrived on the Unit to dismantle old operational building. Should improve operations. Shipment of oil received. Normal operations otherwise.

4 Jan 45

Mild with rain. Progress of dismantling old operations building going very well. Normal operations.

5 Jan 45

Mild but still slightly raining. Unit visited by #9 CMU Officer i/c of demolition of operational building, accompanied by S/O Bedlake, Tofino, BC. Unit received new outboard motor for use of personnel.

6 Jan 45

Mild with rain. Heavy rain later on in the day. Only slight aircraft activity. New outboard motor received from #3 RD is in perfect running condition, quite a change from the old one.

7 Jan 45

Still wet and mild. Very quiet day. Summary of a/c for week 58 tracks. Max range 142 miles, longest track 250.

8 Jan 45

Mild with rain, low hanging clouds. Demolition of old operations building completed.

9 Jan 45

Mild, cool towards evening. Four engined a/c reported lost in vicinity of Vancouver or Boundary Bay, later thought to be north of Unit on West Coast of Island. Many a/c in search.

10 Jan 45

Wet and mild. Many a/c still continuing to search for lost a/c, Liberator. Normal station routine otherwise. Movie in evening enjoyed by all.

11 Jan 45

Mild, heavy rain. No a/c activity although reports received by the Unit that the a/c lost on the 9th is still missing. Three RCAF airmen visited the Unit to give recital of music which was very much enjoyed.

12 Jan 45

Mild, heavy rain. No further word of missing a/c. No 3 RD personnel arrived to carry out quarterly overhaul on ASV Beacons. Show in the evening fair.

13 Jan 45

Mild, cloudy with rain. Normal operations.

14 Jan 45

Mild, heavy rain. Several postings have taken place during the week. Approximately half station personnel have been changed during the past few weeks.

15 Jan 45

Mild, cloudy. Summary of activity at operations for the week is as follows: Tracks 101, max range 142 miles, longest track 185 miles. Muster parade held at 1400 hrs to inform airmen of new discharge policy and amendments as laid down in WAC signal M820.

16 Jan 45

Mild with rain. Pay parade held at 11:45 and 12:45 hrs. Normal station routine.

17 Jan 45

Mild but cloudy. Normal operations. Movie in the Camp Rec Hall in the evening enjoyed by all.

18 Jan 45

Cool but clear for a change. F/O Glover arrived at the Unit to take over duties as Adjutant.

19 Jan 45

Another clear and cool day. Unit visited by W&B Officer and F/S Diesel Mechanic. F/O Nuff estimated material and labour necessary to re-roof buildings in the camp. The F/Sgt Diesel Fitter from Tofino inspected conditions of the Power House, report very satisfactory. Overhaul of all Diesels will take place in the near future. Unit also visited by WAC Fire Chief and a F/Sgt. It is proposed to do away with the fire cart now on the Unit and install hose attached directly to the hydrants in the camp; these would then be available for immediate use. F/L Carlisle is also going to take steps to have hose replaced from RCAF Tofino every three months so that this Unit's fire equipment will be in good serviceable condition at all times. A Signals Officer from WAC also visited the Unit. H/F/L JS Bonham, the new Padre from Tofino paid his first visit to this Unit. F/L Williams, Personnel Counsellor, made his usual month visit.

20 Jan 45

Clear and cool. Normal Operations. Endeavor being made to replace the coal burning stove in the kitchen by oil which will be much more satisfactory.

Cool, clear. Normal operations.

22 Jan 45

Another clear day, slightly warmer, light south east wind. Operational activity for the week ending Sunday is as follows: Tracks 406, max range 140 miles, longest track 170 miles.

23 Jan 45

Clear and warm. Muster Mess Meeting held in evening to discuss general matters pertaining to the Unit. Routine normal.

24 Jan 45

Clear and warm. F/O Bourne and WO1 Ronberg, Command RT personnel, arrived from Tofino on routine inspection of MT equipment. Arrangements instituted to exchange present stake truck for a new one. Party of aircrew arrived from Tofino in afternoon to tour the Operational site.

25 Jan 45

Beautiful day. Arrangements made with Marine Section at Ucluelet for daily pick-up of mail for the Unit at the Post Office in Ucluelet. Morning marine run discontinued. Operations fairly quiet. Routine normal.

26 Jan 45

Clear and warm. Supply of rations arrived. Weekly inspection of the Unit conducted by the Commanding Officer. Work is progressing satisfactorily on preparation of the Hospital Building for occupancy. Considerable stock is already on hand and arrangements are under way to acquire all additional, necessary items.

27 Jan 45

Clear and comparatively warm with some wind. Commanding Officer departed on a few days well-earned leave. F/L Bonham, Protestant Padre at RCAF Tofino, arrived on the Unit and conducted a short service in the Rec Hall during the evening. Operations fairly active.

28 Jan 45

Clear and warm, with slight wind. Padre departed for Ucluelet in the morning and is expected to return in two weeks, maintaining that schedule thereafter. Some trouble experienced during the afternoon with the beacon antenna. A direct short developed at the start of the feeder which made the Beacon u/s for a period of 4 hours. Fault was corrected and equipment back on the air. Show in the evening enjoyed by the station personnel.

29 Jan 45

Clear and warm. Normal routine throughout the day. Repaired beacon antenna performing satisfactorily according to report from 4 BR at Tofino. The Power House reported that the power leg in the Accomodation Area comprising of the Rec Hall, Mess Hall, Administration Building, Hospital and Laundry is seriously overloaded. Possibility of changing Rec Hall over to the second leg, along with the three barrack blocks is to be investigated. Summary of activity at operations for the week is as follows: Tracks 424, max range 147, longest track 275.

30 Jan 45

Clear and warm thoughout the day, cooling considerably in the evening. Water barge was taken away in the morning for refilling. Power House again reported overloading of one power leg during evening. Series of ammeter readings being taken for a period of two days to secure an accurate picture of load fluctuations. Operations fairly active throughout the day.

31 Jan 45

Heavily overcast with intermittent rain throughout the day. Accountant Officer arrived at noon from Tofino and the end of the month pay parade was held in the Rec Hall at 12:45 hours. Water barge returned and pumping of water resumed. Evening show in the Rec Hall enjoyed as usual by personnel attending. Operations rather quiet throughout the day.

1 Feb 45

Clear during early part of the day becoming overcast in afternoon with considerable wind. F/O Stott arrived back at noon off a short leave. Unit notified that a new stake truck had arrived at Ucluelet as a replacement for the one currently held. Arrangements made with Marine Section at Ucluelet to effect the transport of the new one down to this Unit and return of the old one. Orderly Room completed the month-end returns for January in the evening and will be mailed out tomorrow.

2 Feb 45

Heavily overcast with almost continuous rain. New truck was brought down from Ucluelet in the afternoon and landed without difficulty. The old vehicle was returned at the same time. Inspection of the Unit conducted by the Commanding Officer. Operations was comparatively quiet throughout the day.

3 Feb 45

Overcast with intermittent showers. Construction of outside connecting office at the Power House began by the Unit carpenter. Completion of same should greatly improve the accomodation available for uninterupted work on Power House Records, files etc. Unit visited briefly during the afternoon by S/L Huggett, F/L McKinty and F/L Bonham, all from RCAF Station, Tofino.

4 Feb 45

Heavily overcast with periodic heavy rain squalls. Day spent quietly with routine normal. Evening show in the Rec Hall "Mark Twain" particularly enjoyed by station personnel.

5 Feb 45

Beautiful warm day. First of weekly shipment of rations arrived from the RCASC. An oil stove also obtained from Ucluelet for use in the new Unit Hospital. The Rec Hall was changed over during the afternoon from one power leg to another. Together with the three Barrack Blocks, it now constitutes one feed. It is hoped a considerably better balance of feeders will be effected by the change. A new set of ammeter readings is to be taken over a period of two days to determine the result of the change-over.

6 Feb 45

Solidly overcast with driving rain during most of the day. Overhaul party arrived at noon, prepared to begin quarterly overhaul of Operations gear as soon as permission granted from Command. Sea was too rough for late afternoon marine run to be made from Ucluelet. High winds during the afternoon necessitated locking of gantry at point and apart from short intervals thereafter, it remained locked throughout the evening.

7 Feb 45

Heavily overcast with intermittent rain. Greatly disminished wind over the preceding day with calmer seas. Marine service between unit and Ucluelet resumed at noon. Landline communications with Filter interrupted several times during the day. R/T communication reasonably satisfactory throughout such intervals. Operations quiet.

8 Feb 45

Clearing throughout early day, becoming overcast during latter part. Station went off the air for Quarterly Overhaul at 0800 hrs and good progress made during day. Late afternoon boat brought semi-weekly rations, canteen order and 10 drums of stove oil. Routine about the station normal. Educational films shown in the Rec Hall in evening.

9 Feb 45

Overcast with occasional rain and wind. Quarterly overhaul is proceeding satisfactorily. Repaired Beacon Antenna arrived from 3 Repair Depot and is being assembled. Regular inspection of the Station conducted by the Commanding Officer. Complete painting of one of the barrack block interior commenced this morning. Unit visited by two personnel from No 51 ARS Mobile Repair and Inspection Unit and the MT equipment at this Unit was found to be in good condition, requiring no attention or repair. Regular show in the evening particularly enjoyed by all personnel.

10 Feb 45

Clear and unsettled, with considerable wind. Quarterly overhaul continues. Erection of repaired beacon antenna is temporarily held up, pending arrival from Tofino of certain steel plates to facilitate its mounting. Padre arrived from Tofino in later afternoon and conducted a short service in the Rec Hall in the evening. A small cribbage tournament was enjoyed by personnel following the service.

11 Feb 45

Cool, cloudy with considerable rain. Padre returned to Tofino during the morning. Sanitation generally, and the strong suggestion of everyone in the Camp made it necessary, finally, to bar the neighbouring Indians from the afternoon show. The change of policy became effective today and the enjoyment of the personnel who have to view the afternoon showing was increased immeasurably.

12 Feb 45

Clearing but cool throughout the day. Quarterly Overhaul continued according to schedule. Rations arrived from Ucluelet during afternoon. Arrangements completed with Ucluelet and Tofino for transfer of drag saw to Tofino Village for repairs. Provision also made for the supply from Tofino of a bulk load of coal to be transported by truck and landing barge. This will replace the former policy of sacking small quantities of coal for two week periods. Construction of office at Diesel Power Building resumed at noon following the return to the station of the Unit Carpenter.

13 Feb 45

Clear and bright with cool wind. Landing barge arrived from Ucluelet during the morning with two truck loads of coal. Trucks were driven off and dumped without difficulty, a decided improvement on the sacking of small quantity of coal every two weeks. The SMO and the Works & Buildings Officer arrived from Tofino on the noon boat and looked over the Unit briefly returning on the same boat.

14 Feb 45

Clear and bright. Drag saw was sent to Tofino during the morning, with its return to be made on Saturday following repairs. A good supply of stored wood is on hand to bridge the period. Quarterly Overhaul of technical equipment finished late in the day. Arrangements completed for station to resume operations in the morning. New beacon array installed and now operational.

15 Feb 45

Clear and warm. Station back on the air at 0800 hrs. Advice received that No 33 R Unit at Tofino and ourselves will use the same landline for telling purposes. Arrangements are to be made to distinguish plots from the two stations, and provision completed for alternative R/T telling at the point landline saturation.

16 Feb 45

Clear and bright, becoming slightly overcast in latter part of day. Mid-month pay parade held in the Rec Hall at 11:45 hrs. Personnel Counsellor from Tofino paid his regular monthly visit to the Unit. Mid-month returns completed and will be mailed tomorrow. Movie in the evening "The Seventh Cross" enjoyed by all personnel.

17 Feb 45

Clear and warm. Drag saw returned from Tofino during the morning. Work continued in readying the chlorination gear in conjunction with the water supply. First trial is to be made when water is next pumped from the barge. Sgt Hinde & Cpl Martin arrived from 3 RD and Tofino to check inventories.

18 Feb 45

Clear and bright but somewhat cooler than preceding day. Inventory check continued. Very quiet day with normal routine.

19 Feb 45

Cloudy and cool with intermittent rain in afternoon. Checking of inventories continuing. Potato peeler arrived from RCAF Station Neepawa, Man. Its practical value to a unit of this size is somewhat in doubt. Some difficulty being experienced in saturation of the landline to Filter Detachment due to telling by this and No 33 R Unit. Situation results in ths Unit going over to R/T contact more frequently than before.

20 Feb 45

Fairly clear and warm. Taking of inventories completed and checking personnel departed. The CO left during the day on a few days leave and TD in Vancouver and Victoria. Chlorination of the water supply began during the day's pumping operations. Correct amount of chlorine established for this Unit's water supply and regular injections will be made hereafter each time pumping is carried out.

21 Feb 45

Slightly overcast but warm. Training flights conducted from Tofino during the afternoon with instructions for new Crews on Beacon Homing. Unit rifle inspection held during the day. Routine otherwise normal.

22 Feb 45

Overcast with brief showers throughout the day. Water barge taken away during morning and returned filled at night. Barge itself noticed to be listing badly. Ucluelet marine section reports that it is in bad shape and should be repaired. F/L Turner, #2 TSU, representation at WAC, arrived in afternoon to conduct certain tests on the technical site.

23 Feb 45

Beautiful day, warm and bright. Water pumped during the morning and chlorination effected. Inspection of the accomodation area conducted with satisfactory results. Evening show in Rec Hall enjoyed by all.

24 Feb 45

Clear, bright day. Unit visited during the morning by F/L Whiting, Command Works Officer, and F/O Neff W&B Officer at Tofino. Arrangements completed for reroofing of buildings at an early date; also the supply of another two loads of coal from Tofino prior to departure from Ucluelet of the landing barge. Regular Church Service cancelled due to the inability of F/L Bonham to make the trip from Tofino.

25 Feb 45

Clear and warm. Day spent quietly with routine normal.

26 Feb 45

Clear and bright. F/L Turner completed his tests at the technical site and arranged to proceed to 33 RU. An effort made during the afternoon to filter the Thyratron noise from the power lines to reduce base ground interference in the communications receiver. Considerable success attained. Fire box and grate of kitchen stove repaired during day.

27 Feb 45

Beautiful warm day. F/L Turner departed by noon boat. Two more loads of coal arrived by barge. Unloading effected without incident. Monthly Mess Meeting held in the Rec Hall in evening followed by a round of Bingo.

28 Feb 45

Clear and warm with wind. Accounts Officer arrived from Tofino and conducted the month-end pay parade. F/O Stott returned off leave. Visiting marine personnel from Ucluelet arrived on the Unit to inspect the condition of the water scow. Suggestions were advanced re the more effective mooring of the barge to avoid damage to the pier and wharf.

1 Mar 45

Clear bright day with some wind. Water supply getting low. Barge removed during morning and returned late in afternoon. Water pumped immediately on arrival. S/O Smith, Messing Officer at Tofino, visited the Unit, during the noon hour and reviewed the special messing problems peculiar to this Unit.

2 Mar 45

Clear and warm. Weekly inspection of the Unit conducted by the Commanding Officer with satisfactory results. Posting notice received on F/O Stott, sending him to No 27 RU, Marble Island. F/L Campbell is posted in from the latter unit in exchange. Month-end returns completed and mailed out.

3 Mar 45

Slightly overcast with considerable wind. F/O Stott spent the day at Tofino getting cleared and arranging dispatch of inventories pending change-over. Chorination tests made daily seem to indicate a rapid absorption of the concentration by the wooden tank, resulting in a greatly reduced residual content reading 24 hours after injection.

4 Mar 45

Clear and bright accompanied by strong, cold wind. Routine normal.

5 Mar 45

Slightly overcast and cool. F/Sgt Braine and party arrived during the day to begin survey of unit preparatory to drawing up of map of accomodation and technical sites.

6 Mar 45

Dull with some wind. Survey of Unit continues. Inventory of Library books on Unit made with a view to exchanging them for a newer and more modern selection of books. Signing over of inventories and S & C Publications completed. F/O Stott departed on posting to #27 RU.

7 Mar 45

Driving rain and wind of close to gale proportions throughout greater part of the day. S/O Brittain and S/O Smith visited the Unit over the noon hour inspected and reviewing messing on the station and special problems pertaining thereto. Automatic milk mixer put into operation today with excellent results.

8 Mar 45

Heavily overcast with intermittent rain throughout the day. Mid-week rations drawn from RCASC at Ucluelet. Water scow hauled away for refilling. Serious breaks noted in elbows of kitchen stove piping. Efforts made to obtain replacements as present situation constitutes a serious fire hazard.

9 Mar 45

Clearing somewhat with short passing showers. Station ran out of water during the morning. Water scow arrived at noon and pumping begun immediately. Weekly inspection of the accomodation area conducted with satisfactory results. PQ51 (On ADC outpost) reported an Indian fishing boat picked up on the sea without crew by a Coast Guard Cutter and beached at this site. Village personnel were notified and identity and ownership of the vessel established. Arrangements made for boat to be picked up and and surrounding area searched.

10 Mar 45

Clearing with intermittent showers. Water scow removed during the morning for refilling. Chlorination tests continue to show a high absorption of the original concentration following injection. Survey of Unit continued throughout the day.

11 Mar 45

Particularly bad day. Driving rain lashed by a harsh wind, continuing throughout the day. Outdoor routing at a standstill due to inclement weather.

12 Mar 45

Another bad day. Driving rain and sleet with particularly strong wind. Two piles against which water scow rides torn out and satisfactory mooring of the scow is now particularly difficult. Kitchen range repaired and temporary pipes installed to remove possible fire hazard until arrival of new pipes on order.

13 Mar 45

Particularly bad weather continues. Impossible to moor water scow in usual position at end of dock due to shifting ground swell. Scow hauled in and beached as sole alternative. Unit getting short of water and channel too rough to permit transfer of scow for refilling. Despite the strong wind the past few days Operations have continued without a break.

14 Mar 45

Slightly improved condition of weather but still wet and windy. Water scow seems to have developed a bad leak and is listing sharply to one side. Pumped bilge from scow during morning and it was transferred immediately after by Marine Section. Arrangements made with W&B Tofino and authorities at Command to have a series of six or more piles driven in at the end of the dock as early as possible. Overseas postings received for Cpl Freeman and LAC Jopson, Radar Mechanics.

15 Mar 45

Weather considerably calmed. Landing barge arrived with two truck loads of coal from Tofino, adding to an already sizeable supply of fuel. Inspection of the Unit conducted during the morning with satisfactory results.

16 Mar 45

Weather considerably calmer but still windy. Water scow returned during morning and pumping proceeded immediately. Cutting of piles for new mooring berth begun.

17 Mar 45

Heavily overcast with some rain. Command Dairy Assistant arrived on the Unit to spend the day instructing personnel on the effective use of mechanical milk reconstruction equipment. A second visit is planned on his return from 11 RU at which time it is hoped certain utensils now lacking will be on hand. Shipment of reserve rations arrived from Tofino. Several personnel went to Ucluelet in the evening to attend a travelling show staged by a Vancouver Concert Party.

18 Mar 45

Heavy rain and wind. Water scow had to be beached again to avoid damage to the pier and floating dock.

19 Mar 45

Diminished wind but almost continuous rain. BC Standard arrived early in the morning putting off 50 drums of diesel oil and taking on 100 empties. Overseas posting received for F/O Glover, Radar. Authority requested to extend reporting dates of Cpl Freeman and LAC Jopson to assure them full leave.

20 Mar 45

Windy with almost continous rain. Freeman and Jopson spent the day at Tofino being cleared. Advice received that F/O Glover's posting cancelled on medical grounds. Water supply running low and scow transferred at noon for refilling.

21 Mar 45

High wind and continuous driving rain. Water scow returned in late afternoon and was moored with considerable difficulty. Cutting of hemlock piles completed during the day. Advice received that F/L Campbell, incoming CO posted overseas. F/L Campbell is currently at 27 RU awaiting replacement.

22 Mar 45

Continuing wind and spasmodic rain squalls. Routine normal with no significant occurrences.

23 Mar 45

Somewhat calmer with only light showers, though solidly overcast. Regular inspection of the Camp area conducted during the morning with highly satisfactory results. Cpl Love, Command Dairy Assistant, paid a return visit to the Unit and demonstrated to Mess personnel the proper procedure in reconstruction of milk.

24 Mar 45

A beautiful day throughout. Calm, bright and warm. Drag saw used for sawing wood supply u/s. Arrangements made with work shop in Tofino to look it over and effect what repairs they can. At the same time, examine the repairs recently done by the Tofino Village Machine Shop. Bingo enjoyed by Station Personnel in evening.

25 Mar 45

Wind of gale proportions with driving rain.Water scow broke loose from its moorings in the early hours of the morning and under the surging force of a particularly heavy ground swell, crashed into the dock leading to the Salisbury Tea Rooms, taking out a third of the pier. Scow itself landed up on the rocky shore across the cove completely under water. Marine Section of Ucluelet contacted and in due course scow dragged off the rocks and hauled to Ucluelet. W&B at Tofino notified and arrangements made to effect a speedy substitute water supply since Ucluelet Marine Section pronounced scow completely u/s. No action on piles as yet, although all parties again advised of the urgency of the job.

246Mar 45

Another beautiful day, an amazing change from yesterday. W&B Tofino and Marine Section Ucluelet again contacted and assurance received that a substitute water tank to be sent down from Tofino during the day and mounted on the Mooring Barge. Water supply getting low. Use restricted to essential needs. Action on driving of piles to be expedited by Tofino. All piles are cut at this Unit and waiting. Drag saw sent to Tofino on noon run. Diesel NCO1 reported trouble with one of the units. A broken bolt head found. Unit shut down and F/S Barker at Tofino contacted. Walk-in refrigerator in Mess u/s. Electrician at Tofino contacted with a view to having him come down in the morning and look it over.

27 Mar 45

Fairly good day, calm with brilliant sunshine throughout the greater part. F/S Barker arrived from Tofino and made basic inspection of Diesel Unit. Command contacted by telephone and complete tear-down of unit advised. Work to begin tomorrow. Electrician arrived on the Unit and inspected u/s refrigerator in Mess Hall. Motor needs a little attention but is otherwise in good shape. Trouble diagnosed as gas leakage. Command advised of the situation.

28 Mar 45

Cloudy with wind and threatened rain. Work begun on faulty diesel Unit. Storage of perishable foods being made in Box Refrigerator in Canteen. Unit advised that a refrigerator party will visit the Unit in a few days to effect repairs to Walk-in. Command advised that the pile-driver at Nootka-Vanfield Cannery is available if the latter Company can supply a Steam Engineer. Mr Erickson contacted at the Cannery and agrees to provide an engineer, the driver and scow during the first week in April.

29 Mar 45

Heavily overcast with occasional rain. Work on Diesel Unit proceeding. Unit expected to be back in service tomorrow. Tofino work shop advises that drag saw was inspected and sent on to Tofino Village machine shop. Work is to be carried out there and saw picked up on Saturday.

30 Mar 45

Heavily overcast with drizzly rain throughout the day. Regular inspection of Camp Area and Buildings conducted with satisfactory results. Heavy wind throughout the night.

31 Mar 45

Bright warm day with brisk wind. Pulley on Turning Gear of Antenna giving troubles. Taken off and found to be badly worn. Machining of spare pully done at Cannery during day and put back into place at night, working very satisfactory. Water hauled and pumped during the day. Combination of one large tank and invasion barge has worked out eminently well. Barge is brought down by marine section, the tank pumped, and the barge immediately returned, entailing mo mooring problem at this Unit.

Beautiful warm day. Tanker arrived in late morning and stood by until early afternoon when rising tide permitted unloading of 50 drums of oil. No empties taken on. Repaired Diesel Unit performing well, though complete overhaul of all three Units badly needed.

2 Apr 45

Another bright warm day. Cannery advises that they will be unable to provide a Steam Engineer for at least another week. While the water supply is maintained by the invasion barge, the need for piles at this end is removed. However replacement of the damaged civilian dock remains pressing.

Overcast with threatended rain. Some wood cut during the day, by crosscut to avoid too rapid depletion of wood reserve. S/L Abrams and F/L Forrest arrived on the Unit for one day period of TD.

Day of fitful sunshine and rain with consideraable wind. S/L Abrams and F/L Forrest departed at noon. Remaining water in head tank drained and inside completely scrubbed and washed out. Considerable sediment found to have accumulated on the bottom. Barge arrived with fresh water and tank immediately refilled. Usual Wednesday evening show enjoyed by good attendance.

Cold, wet day. Work virtually stopped. Walk-in refrigerator in Mess still u/s. Storage of meat in box refrigerator has proved rather unsatisfactory.

Dull, cloudy day with intermittent rain. Regular weekly inspection of Accommodation area conducted with good results. Refrigeration Mechanic arrived during afternoon and effected repairs to Walk-in Refrigerator, leaving on afternoon boat. Considerable wood split up during the day to add to the reserve.

Cloudy with rain throughout early part, improving considerably toward evening. Advise received from Tofino that Power Saw has not been touched as yet. Prospect is that it will be overhauled during early part of coming week. Walk-in refrigerator u/s again. Command notified and a new Unit is to be shipped out immediately. Very enjoyable dance held on the Unit in the evening with several girls from Ucluelet Village and the Nootka-Banfield Cannery attending as guests.

Bright, warm day but with particularly strong wind. Party of WD Personnel from Tofino, under the direction of S/O Bodlake arrived on the Station for lunch, a stop in a day's excursion in search of sea shells. Large number of Unit personnel travelled to Ucluelet in the evening to witness the "Lifebuoy Follies", a travelling concert show.

Slightly overcast with considerable wind. Station off the air for two hours and 23 minutes during early hours of morning due to breakdown. Small amount of wood cut and split during the day to add to reserve. No word of Power Saw's return. Regular Sunday evening show shown tonight since most of the personnel off the station Sunday night.

10 Apr 45

Cool day with fine rain falling throughout most of it. Refrigeration Mechanics arrived with new cooling unit and installation completed by evening. This should solve all the Refrigeration difficulties on the Unit. Mechanic is remaining on the station until noon tomorrow to check operation of new Unit.

11 Apr 45

Somewhat improved over yesterday. Considerable wind but no rain. Refrigeration unit continues to operate satisfactorily and Mechanic departed on the noon boat. The Cannery advises that they will be ready to begin driving piles on Thursday. Arrangements made with Ucluelet Marine section to have the barge carrying the driver towed across the inlet tomorrow morning. Water hauled and pumped during the day.

Beautiful day, warm and bright with no wind. Pile driver arrived at 1000 hrs and work well under way by noon. However only one man available from the cannery who is familiar with the job and inexperienced Unit man-power will result in the complete job taking more than the one day previously expected.

13 Apr 45

Very slightly overcast with fine drizzle. Driving of piles continued from 0900 hrs and building of crib for Unit's water scow completed by 1700 hrs. Driver moved across the Cove at high tide to location of damaged civilian pier, ready for work upon tomorrow morning at low tide. Station ensign flown at half-mast in memory of the Late President.

14 Apr 45

Overcast with fine rain falling throughout most of the day. Work begun at 0900 hrs on the civilian dock across the Cove but it was found impossible to drive piles at that point. Ground is solid rock and piles must be set in cement, stood in position and braced. Work broken off to continue Monday. Power Saw has not yet been repaired. Is promised for Wednesday of next week. Station off the air for 15 minutes during the day for abnormal maintenance. F/L Benham, Protestant Padre from Tofino visited the station during the evening and conducted a short religious service. Ensign remains at half-mast.

Bright and warm but with a particulary strong wind. Unit visited during the afternoon by S/L Lister and F/L Hunsley from Tofino and F/O Rogers from Ucluelet. Purpose of visit was to lay groundwork for correlation of 8th Victory Loan Campaign at the three units. Projector broke down in evening and regular Sunday show had to be cancelled.

Bright warm day. Considerable progress made during the day toward the addition of a length of floating dock between the existing one and the shortened extremity of the damaged civilian dock. S/L Moran and party of 15 from Sector visited the Unit during the afternoon and were admitted to the Technical area on a familiarization visit. Quarterly beacon overhaul party arrived and commenced work in afternoon.

17 Apr 45

Wet and cool. Marine section, Ucluelet arranged to pick up the pile driver and return it to Nootka-Banfield Cannery. Transfer made during afternoon. Overhaul of beacon continues.

18 Apr 45

Heavily overcast, with steady drizzle throughout the day. Water scow returned and water pumped during the afternoon. Chlorination pump found to be not working. Tofino W&B notified. Regular Wednesday evening show enjoyed by a good attendance. Ucluelet's projector is being used during the unserviceability of our own.

Heavily overcast with threatened rain, but very calm. Overhaul of beacons completed and party departed. Work has progressed in repair of civilian dock across the cove, by Unit personnel. Job is three-quarters completed. Piles on this Unit's dock straightened and set back into place where loose water scow had dislodged them from position. Extra Messing purchases discontinued until current deficit in Messing account is made up.

Completely overcast with continuously driving rain and wind. Outside work brought to a standstill. Regular weekly inspection of the Accommodation Area conducted with very satisfactory results. Enjoyable show presented in the Recreation Hall in the evening including 8th Victory Loan films.

Bright and sunny but with particularly high wind throughout the preceding night and greater part of the day. Station off the air part of the night due to gales. Two large trees blown down during the night immediately adjacent to the accomodation area breaking both R/T Antennas in the process. Great part of day spent repairing aerials. Completed by mid-afternoon with considerable difficulty due to continuous high wind. Station on the air throughout the day.

Fair day with considerably diminished wind. S/L Miels and F/L McKinty of No 2 Filter Detachment, paid a visit to the Unit to discuss matters mutually concerning Filter and the Unit.

Comparatively clear, occasioned showers. S/L Miels and F/L McKinty returned to the Unit during the morning and visited the Operation site. Unfortunately little air activity at the time. Monthly Mess Meeting held during the evening with election of new officers and discussion of Unit business.

Beautiful clear day. Camp area generally, cleaned up and put in order. Volley ball court laid out and levelled off prepartory to starting a league among Unit personnel. Water scow refilled during the day and pumped in the late afternoon. Bond sales going well.

Clear and bright but with a harsh wind. Continuation of cleaning up is pursued with good results. W/C Gagnon, Command RC Chaplain arrived on the Unit and spoke briefly to the RC personnel. Departed in evening.

Dull with light drizzly rain. S/L Limbrick, Command Radar Officer arrived on the Unit and visited the Technical Site. Visit was shortened by early departure of aircraft from Tofino. Unit over the top in sale of Victory Bonds.

Anchorage of the newly-added portion of the civilian dock found to be inadequate. Steps are being taken to construct and place in position a more satisfactory anchor which will prohibit the lateral swing of the floating dock. Evening movie shown with considerable difficulty. Move projector partially u/s.

Another lovely day, deteriorating somewhat during latter part. Shipment of reserve ration vegetables arrived and were stored away. Regular evening film missed due to u/s projector.

Slightly overcast with some wind. Unit notified that test flight calibration exercise would be made on Friday. All arrangements for R/T communication with aircraft and general instructions governing flight completed. No 33 RU informed of plan and their part in the exercise. One Diesel Engine giving trouble.

4 May 45

Heavily overcast throughout the day. Test flight exercise cancelled due to low ceiling. To be run off tomorrow, weather permitting. Regular inspection of the Accommodation area, conducted by the Commanding Officer. Repaired projector back from Vancouver and evening show greatly enjoyed by all personnel.

Completely overcast with almost continuous rain. Regular ration run made to Ucluelet but Canteen run to Tofino cancelled due to the particularly inclement weather. Water scow hauled away in the morning.

Heavily overcast with intermittent rain. Outdoor activity still curtailed by poor weather. Operations quiet. Unit advised of a second test flight to be conducted on Saturday, 12 May, and operating out of No 11 RU, Ferrer Point. This Unit in readiness for its part in the test.

Heavily overcast with intermittent rain. Test flight cancelled for the day. New date to be advised. F/L Baldwin departed at 1300 hrs on posting to No 2 TSU, Penhold, stopping in at Command en route. Dance held in Recreation Hall in the evening, well attended and enjoyed.

Cloudy with scattered showers. Present storage space for Reserve Rations found to be too warm. New spare prepared adjacent to the laundry room and rations transferred. Water scow removed during the day and returned at night.

Weather improved over the preceding day. Condition of the turning motor at the Point becoming worse. Gear turning very slowly and continuously in one direction. 2 TSU readvised of its condition and Command informed by telephone. Notice of posting of F/O Smith received.

Clear and bright with warming temperature. Mid-month pay parade conducted at 1145 and 1245 hrs. All movie projectors in the area u/s and Unit will be without show for two weeks.

18 May 45

Warm and bright. Orderly Room busy with outgoing mail. Receipt of incoming mail on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays via Uchuck not working out very satisfactorily. Efforts to be made again to have incoming mail for this Unit sorted into separate bag and dropped off directly at the Unit on Uchuck's outgoing stop. Regular weekly inspection of the Camp area conducted with satisfactory results.

19 May 45

Clear and warm. Plank road repaired throughout its length, certain sprung planks being spiked down and broken ones replaced. F/O Smith arrived on posting from WAC. No reply from 2 TSU re: turning motor. Rotation is very slow and motor obviously in bad condition.

20 May 45

Dull day but warm and calm. Station involved during the morning in tracking of an American aircraft showing distress IFF off Cape Flattery. Some difficulty experienced in picking up track and detecting IFF signal, but aircraft later tracked to its crash and two rescue craft plotted to the point of disappearance of distressed aircraft.

21 May 45

Continuing dull but warm and calm. Unit in contact with Command re: incident preceding day and apparently some dissatifaction with regard to the performance of this Station during the incident. Grounds for complaint is, at the moment, not known or appreciated at this Unit. A second call during afternoon advised that party would arrive at Unit on Wednesday to investigate circumstances.

22 May 45

Dull but calm and warm. Turning motor continues to labor very hard. Little difficulty experienced with IFF gear during the day, but later corrected. Water scown hauled away.

23 May 45

Continuing warm and calm but dull. S/L Mills, F/L McGee and F/O MacKenzie arrived on the Unit during the afternoon to investigate circumstances surrounding incident of Sunday last. Complaint concerned inability of this Unit to pick up echoe or IFF signal for an interval of some minutes following advise from Filter that a distressed aircraft was in the range of this Station. The fact remains, no response whatever was detected, despite the best efforts of the crew concerned, until seven minutes after query received and information was passed to Filter without delay.

Continuing warm and overcast. Unit advised of posting in of F/L Sparks as Commanding Officer. Wire screening on garbage room replaced.

25 May 45

Warm and calm but continuing dull. Regular weekly inspection of the camp area conducted. Unit is still without shows, a fast greatly regretted by personnel.

Brightened somewhat over preceding day and continuing warm. Turning motor still running but is protesting vigorously in the process. Whist and cribbage played in the Recreation Hall during evening. Unit visited by F/L Bonham, Protestant Padre from Tofino.

Warm and bright. First day of the voting in Federal Election for War Service electors. Unit advised that replacement turning motor is being supplied by 17 ED.

Another bright warm day. Unit visited by 9 CMU Officers for purpose of inspecting roofs of buildings in accommodation area prepartory to their resurfacing. Regular Monthly Mess Meeting of all Unit personnel held during evening.

Sgt Dingle WAC Special Services left the Station having spent a week instructing in leatherwork in which the airmen took a decided interest. Arrangements have been made to obtain a supply of leather and additional tools. Sgts Eddy, Martin, and Shewchuk left for RCAF Tofino to get cleared prior to their discharge. The remaining four due for discharge are being held until replacements arrive.

Weather: Cool with fog in the morning, turning bright and warm in the afternoon. The Drag Saw used for cutting wood for this Unit is giving considerable difficulty and a replacement is necessary in order to get a sufficient amount of work done. Weather: Cool with fog. Equipment Officer at Tofino is going to get a replacement for our Drag Saw.

Weather: Fair and cool. F/L Porritt and F/O Smith visited Tofino on business and arranged a grant to pay for our original stock of leather for our Hobby Shop through Tofino Staton Funds.

Weather: Cool with fog and rain. Sgt Fitzgerald of No 9 CMU Vancouver visited this Unit to inspect chlorinator and put it in a serviceable condition. Alan M Hurst, Area Secretary, National YMCA War Services, Pacific Area, visited this station. Motion picture projector is to be sent to Vancouver for servicing.

Weather: Cool and very foggy.

Weather: F/O Smith left the unit on annual leave. A very successful Station dance was held in the evening and was well attended.

Weather: This Unit's projector is still in Vancouver undergoing repairs. However, one was borrowed from Ucluelet to show the technicolour film "National Velvet". Tonight the news of the moment is rumours of peace in the Pacific but nothing is very official as yet.

Weather: With two of the three personnel available to man this ADC Post on the discharge list, WAC has been approached with a view to either closing the post or providing personnel to man it.

Weather: Today marked the end of the Pacific War. This Unit appears to be celebrating this event in a very suitable fashion. Several mechanics, the hospital assistant and an operator left the unit on discharge.

Weather: Cloudy. Camp very quiet.

WAC's reply to a policy with regard to this ADC Post is not very satisfactory. We are to provide personnel from those on strength. This will be difficult in view of recent postings and discharges.

Weather: Very wet and cold. Our projector has been repaired and is back in service again. Picture shown was "Music for Millions". The regular mid-monthly Pay Parade was held this afternoon.

Weather: Fair and warm. The arrival of the new Corporal Chef was generally acclaimed, especially by the kitchen staff who have been very much over-worked lately. The Protestant Padre from Tofino visited the unit today. It has been decided that, with the limited number of personnel on the unit, a church service here would be so poorly attended as not to prove worthwhile. However,arrangements will be made to attend church services in Ucluelet.

Our last radar mechanic was posted to Tofino for discharge today. Although four replacements have been posted in, none have arrived. As a result, we are unable to release the one mechanic now available.

This unit has been informed that effective 31st August the Army Supply Depot at Ucluelet will cease to function. From that date rations will be drawn from Victoria, but how often and by what means is not known.

Off the air for several hours this morning due to trouble with the PPI Deflector Coil assembly. Informed of a visit Friday by S/L Moran and party of nine.

Party from No 1 SFC visited the Station today and were shown over the technical site. The party, consisting of aircrew officers and an official of DOT, showed considerable interest in the equipment, particularly the Responder Beacon upon which, apparently, a good deal of faith is placed by aircraft crews. The Accountant Officer from Tofino held the month-end pay parade. The first list of discharges for radar operators came through today. Six are being discharged from this station, three of which have yet to arrive.

Weather Informed by Marine Section Ucluelet that this station must make every effort to do it's own marine runs in future, due to limited personnel at Ucluelet. This can be done provided a serviceable outboard motor is issued this unit. This matter is in hand. Five Radar Operators arrived from EAC. Apparently these men have not operated for about nine months. Until several weeks ago this Unit was very short of Radar Operators. We are now over-established.

Instructed by Pat Bay to go on the air for an aircraft believed to be lost. As we are still without a turning gear motor, it was necessary to turn the aerial by hand. Eventually the aircraft was contacted and the station went off the air without seeing anything.

Turning gear motor arrived and installed. Thirteen operators discharged today cutting our strength to below even requirements for twelve hours per day operations.
